SUMMARY

Belarus

  • Pro-government channels continue to reinforce the cult of personality of “president” Aliaksandr Lukashenka. National holidays are used as an occasion for new praise.
  • On the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression (October 30), propagandists harassed and attempted to provoke Western diplomats who were laying flowers at the sites of mass executions of political prisoners during the Stalin period.
  • The authorities continue to consider Belarusians opposing the regime as “enemy number one.” They are the targets of constant propaganda attacks.
  • Disinformation campaign against Belarusian democratic forces: Lukashenka claimed that Raman Pratasevich (co-founder of the NEXTA opposition Telegram channel) is a “spy.” Propaganda began to joyfully spread this news.

The “Collective West”

  • In propaganda narratives, the West continues to be portrayed as a hostile force that poses a threat. Propaganda presents events in Western countries, especially Poland and the Baltic states, in an extremely negative light.
  • Propagandists viewed Poland and Lithuania’s closure of their borders with Belarus not only as a strike against the Russian-Belarusian union (which would not be enough to put pressure on the West), but also as a strike against China.
  • They attempted to portray the sabotage of the railway in Poland as a provocation by Poland itself or a terrorist attack by Ukraine.

War in Ukraine

  • Pro-government channels continue to spread lies and negative, one-sided information about Ukraine, primarily about its military and political leadership. At the same time, Lukashenka himself speaks sympathetically about the suffering of Ukrainians in the war. He is increasingly calling for peace and peace talks. These talking points are repeated by propaganda channels.
  • Anti-corruption investigations into Zelenskyy’s inner circle are being portrayed by propaganda as a signal from the West that “he will be next.”
